October 15, 1952 – February 28, 2017
It is with profound sorrow we announce the passing of Dan, after his battle with a very aggressive cancer.
Dan was born in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt, Saskatchewan to Michael and Petrunella (née Symak) Pantella of Dana, Saskatchewan. He attended Dana Elementary School, with his mother as his teacher for the primary and intermediate grades, and his father as his teacher for his junior high grades. Dan attended Bruno High School for grades 10 to 12, where he excelled in marks, sportsmanship and leadership. He played on the local baseball team, on the Bruno Thunderbirds hockey team, and was president of the school Student Society in grade 12.
Because of his excellent provincial exam marks he received a university entrance scholarship, and attended the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon Campus), where he received his Bachelor of Commerce degree with Great Distinction in 1974. Even though engaged in studies he found time to join intra-mural hockey and baseball teams. He also was elected to the College of Commerce student executive. Eager to further his education he attended UBC in Vancouver where he convocated in 1975 with the degree of Master of Business Administration, completing a two year program in one year.
In 1974 he married Myrna (née Mueller). This was a marriage that endured to his passing.
Upon graduation, he was recruited by Gulf Oil to work in their marketing program, based in Calgary, Alberta. During this time he also completed and passed the Canadian Securities Course. After four years with the company, and a six week vacation to Europe, he decided to try a new field and joined Rentway Canada, a transportation leasing company. This company moved him to London, Ontario as a Branch Manager.
However, the urge to travel was greater than the urge to work. So after two years in London, Dan liquidated assets and with Myrna travelled for a year, going to Hawaii, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Egypt, Europe, and many cities in the U.S. on a trip around the globe from East to West.
Back in Canada, Dan quickly found employment as a Management Consultant with Deloitte Haskins & Sells, based in Regina, Saskatchewan. This was a career that suited his skills perfectly.
He became a family man in Regina with the birth of his two sons, Robert (born in February 1985) and Tyler (born in December 1987). Dan joined the Regina chapter of the Kiwanis Club, becoming president for a portion of a term.
After 6 years with Deloitte, Dan decided to put his investment skills to work and joined the Bank of Montreal as a manager of commercial accounts. After two years the bank wanted to move Dan to Ontario to a branch with a larger profile, but Dan wished for more temperate climes.
He therefore made a calculated career move and in 1990 joined the B.C. provincial government in Victoria. This was his final employer, although there were many different positions and job titles throughout his twenty-two years with the government.
Upon retirement in 2012, Dan had more time to pursue his passions. He would golf when he liked the weather conditions, he played many board games with his family (and usually won), and he and Myrna travelled – to Hawaii, to Palm Springs, to Cuba, to Mexico, and to the family cabin in Saskatchewan. He made the last trip to Saskatchewan cruising in his retirement toy, a red convertible Mustang.
Dan is predeceased by his father Mike (1990), and his mother Pat (2017). He is survived by his wife, Myrna, his children Robert and Tyler (Becky), his siblings Madeline (Morris) of Saskatoon, SK., Eugene of Wakaw, SK, and Philip (Sandra) of Calgary, AB, and many nephews, nieces, cousins and their extended families.
